I chose to study English Language and Linguistics quite last minute when applying to Godalming, always adamant about English Literature, but studying English Language turning out to be the best possible outcome of an impulsive decision. Choosing the subject at A Level based solely off my love for English, I found I was immediately overwhelmed by what it had to offer. I went from being uncertain as to what subject to pick, to discovering a course with an extensive list of content I couldn’t wait to learn.
Studying language change as one of the subject’s modules, I feel that I can now view our language through a much more perceptive lens, lending itself very well to my Literature studies. I also think that this aspect of the course has helped me realise how language can stand the test of time. The advancement of technology seems to warn people against studying English, but the teachers at Godalming have made me realise that no screen can ever match what you as an individual learn on this course. I have found the department to be so encouraging across the board that I have never felt as supported by teachers as I have the past two years. Another aspect I’ve really enjoyed has been the coursework, the freedom of the project offering me an opportunity to apply my interests to the world of Language and Linguistics. There is truly so much free rein, and I have loved being able to find myself as a reader and writer in many different forms of the English language.
